Yesterday was my Last Day as an Oracle employee. Depending on what system I asked, I stopped being an employee around 6pm PT, or 8:30 PT or midnight PT, but by this morning, all my accesses were disabled.
So I’m currently unemployed… until Monday, when I start at RIM, the makers of BlackBerry.

I will be joining Jeff Jackson’s team. The position will involve communities, developers and open source, but I’m going to wait until I have been there for a bit before trying to describe what I’m doing.
I’m very excited with the challenge. The Mobile market is growing very fast and BlackBerry has been there for a long time. The company is focused on the BlackBerry platform and they have very strong expertise in traditional mobile areas (like radio and battery life) and connection to enterprise applications (see Wikipedia entry) and they have recently acquired some very interesting new assets like QNX. They also know they have very strong competition and that they need to improve in a number of areas, including getting more developer adoption.
I will also get access to new gadgets, including the latest BB phones and the Playbook. The Playbook has very nice specs, it uses QNX and includes a Webkit-based browser, plus support for Adobe Air and Java. It’s not yet out, but check out this video comparing it to an iPad.
Stay tuned for more details as I get up to speed at RIM. I also intend to keep an eye on a number of Open Source activities, and I expect to post some commentary here and at @pelegri.

Congratulations!
Are you going to play with BlackBerry-Java, backend services based on Java (maybe GlassFish) or anything else?

Suerte Eduardo,
As a Java developer, I would love to be able to develop desktop java applications for the Playbook or any other tablet style devices. It’s already a pain that having Java cross platform we can not run our apps in Android or Ipad.
Regards,
Pablo.

Gracias, Pablo.
I hear you. Give me some time to get my bearings around here.
Take care, Eduardo

I’m also waiting for Java SDK of PlayBook – have great apps in my mind and I don’t want to use Adobe AIR to solve this. …have already build some great Java apps on BlackBerry SmartPhones.
